Examples of informal learning include: conversing with colleagues or others working in the same field; trial and error; taking part in a group activity; reading a magazine article; searching the internet; writing a journal, or participating in an online forum.

Informal learning is now being officially supported by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DFIUS). The Department has issued a consultation document – Informal Adult Learning: Shaping the Way Ahead – in order to better understand and capitalise on the benefits of informal learning.

Try it yourself by learning informally about informal learning and how it can benefit you and your organisation. Read our eden tree article: How to Improve the Effectiveness of Informal Learning
